Working with others

Workspaces and roles

Everything in Walden lives in a workspace. Yours starts as an idea book only you can see. A team workspace is shared with the people you invite, and each person’s role says what they can change.

Your idea book and a team

  • Your idea book is made for you when you sign up. It’s yours alone: nobody can be invited into it. It’s on the Free or Personal plan.
  • A team workspace is shared by everyone you invite. It has a name an owner chooses, and it’s on the Team plan.

You can be in several at once: your own idea book and any teams you belong to. Each has its own ideas, projects, plan and credits. To switch, open the account menu at the foot of the sidebar and pick one under Workspace. See Plans and credits.

Start a team

  1. In your idea book, open Settings → General and choose Start a team.
  2. Name the team, pick monthly or yearly, and choose Continue to payment.
  3. Once the payment goes through, the team is made with you as its owner, and Walden takes you to People to invite the others.

Your idea book stays as it was, beside the team. A team is billed for each owner and editor; viewers are free.

Invite people

  1. In the team, open Settings → People.
  2. Type their address under Invite by email, pick Editor or Viewer, and choose Invite.

They get an email. Someone who already uses Walden with that address joins straight away; anyone else joins when they first sign in with it. Until then they’re listed as invited, and you can Revoke the invitation.

Who can do what

Owner
Everything an editor can do, and runs the workspace: names it, invites people, changes roles, removes people, manages the plan and credits, and picks the workspace’s AI models.
Editor
Writes. Starts ideas, changes pages, boards and sketches, uses chat and the readers, adds files, settles questions, makes projects, connects repositories, hands ideas off, and shelves, deletes and restores them.
Viewer
Reads everything in the workspace and leaves questions in the margin. A viewer can also present an idea, download it, open its files and pin things. Viewers are free on Team.

Questions are the only thing a viewer leaves; the answer is a change to the page, which an editor makes. See Writing together.

Anyone in the team can connect a coding agent with a key of their own, viewers included, since the engineers who build are often viewers. Handing an idea off and reviewing what was built stay with editors and owners. An owner can turn coding agents off for the whole workspace in Settings → Coding agents. See Coding agents.

Change a role or remove someone

In Settings → People, an owner picks Owner, Editor or Viewer beside each person. Moving someone to or from Viewer changes the number of paid seats. You can’t change your own role.

To remove someone, choose Remove… beside them, then Remove. They lose access at once. What they wrote stays with the team, and to come back someone has to invite them again.

Leave a team

In the team, open Settings → General, choose the Leave button that names the team, and confirm with Leave. You won’t see its ideas any more; what you wrote there stays with the team.

If a team’s plan ends

The team becomes read-only for everyone in it: people can still read and download, and nobody can change anything. The owner can resubscribe from Settings → Plan and credits. Resubscribing pays for every owner and editor still there, so the owner may want to remove people first.

Settings about you, such as your name and appearance, are the same in every workspace. See Your account.
